We did these in Summer School!

Update June 27! I found the source for this great idea! Fabulous art ideas!

http://www.artprojectsforkids.org/

Thank you Kathy Barbro!

This is not my idea, and I found it on the internet 2-3 years ago. I would love to give the author credit, if I could figure out where I got it!
I have been digging through old files and memories, and my daughter Biba helped me with this class. It was a summer program for children who were English Learners, and lived in our downtown neighborhood. We walked to the city library every Wednesday and saw the story hour presentation....then came back and ate popsicles while we read! What could be better?

I think I have read Keep the Lights Burning Abbie twenty times, and each time I discover a lovely detail that I have forgotten or missed. The kids get so wrapped up in this book, and it is easy to read. I plan to keep their artwork over the summer, and have our walls bright and decorated when we return. I think they will go for this, since they will be in my resource reading class again next year

Here is the link to my Keep the Lights Burning Abbie Unit!

No Tears....Summer reading should be fun!

I have seen lots of good intentions with summer reading plans....and that includes my own! My point in creating this booklet was that reading and writing has to be on-going and slightly fun. Some of our families are not literate, and I know too many kids who spend their summers on video games while parents are working two jobs. I really try to push the fun summer program at our wonderful public library too!

Blast Off to Summer and Read Some Books!

This is an oldie but goodie! I used this chart with my own children, and just gave one to a smart Spanish-speaking 2nd grade mom, who really wants her boy to read over the summer. I updated my hand-drawn old Blast-Off chart, and am offering it as a freebie on my TPT store! I tell the kids to bring them back colored in at the end of the summer and we can have an ice cream party!

I finished my "No Tears" Summer Reading and Writing packet.....I just know how summer really goes, and some of the summer workbook stuff turns kids off! This is hopefully easy-breezy, but encourages a love of books and writing.
The adorable beach graphics are from Doodle Darlin'....

This book is a sure favorite, especially for struggling readers who are just getting into chapter books. I have step-by-step scripted lessons for the art activity on my TPT page, and will get the rest of the language arts activities done one of these days!

There's nothing like art in the Springtime(especially after standardized testing)!

Here's my Catwings bulletin board! The kids are loving this book!
